My Bag

Updated July 2013

Bag – Titleist 2013 Staff Tour Bag

I bought this not because I wanted to look like a pro, but because I went through two golf bags in the space of 12 months, each one falling to pieces. So I thought I would invest in a Tour bag that will hopefully be more durable

Irons – Callaway x14 Pro Series (2-PW, 3 iron missing), Stiff Shaft

I was kindly given these irons by a friend who was going to throw them away, after I mentioned that my Dunlop clubs felt like spaghetti. They are pretty ancient by modern standards, but I didn’t want to splash the cash on an expensive set if I wasn’t going to be any good. Thankfully these are great irons, and the stiff shaft makes a huge difference. Because I’ve been using these for the past 8 months, I’ve grown to love the 2 iron, which is a rarity in most modern iron sets

Driver – TaylorMade RocketBallz (Stage 1), Regular Shaft, 9.5 deg

Great driver, though I bought this off the shelf without any custom fitting, so I could do with a stiffer shaft. Never really got used to the adjust-ability, but still makes a beautiful sound.

Fairway Metal – 3 Wood TaylorMade Burner 2.0, 13degree, regular shaft

Off-the-shelf fairway wood, when struck well it produces a lovely ‘ting’. Regular shaft so I always need to watch my tempo as getting too quick with this club can send it skyward very easily.

Hybrid – 4 Iron TaylorMade Burner 2.0, 21 degree, regular shaft

Superb club from the rough, though it can suffer from skyward shots due to high spin, probably because the shaft isn’t right for me. Also, this club is fantastic for chipping around the green if held ‘on the metal’.

Wedges – Titleist Spin Milled Vokey Wedges (52-8bounce, 56-11bounce), regular shafts

The 52 Vokey is actually a lot older than the Spin Milled series, as this was the first club I ever bought back in 2009, before I even considered taking up golf. It’s wonderful from tight lies, and flop shots are never far away with this. The 56 is Spin Milled series, and with 11degrees of bounce it’s great out of a bunker.

Putter – Odyssey White Hot XG #1, 34 inches

Another off-the-shelf number, which has been pretty good to me so far. At the end of 2013 I’m hoping to switch putters to a mallet head to give a bit more weight in the sole, as this putter is nice off the face, but lacks that thud of a heavier club.

Ball – Titleist ProV1x

I started with Titleist DT Solos, then moved to NXT, and now I have settled on the ProV1x. Sometimes I’ll venture to ProV1, but the ‘x’ model feels great with irons and gives me great confidence it creating different shot types. Mind you, they cost a bloody fortune!

Other Equipment – Garmin S1 Approach Watch

I was forever getting my yardages wrong and over-hitting/under-hitting greens, so I decided to invest in one of the Garmin watches in early 2013. I don’t play golf without it now, such is it’s accuracy and benefit to my game. Althouh buying it in white perhaps wasn’t the smartest move, as it does look a bit flashy.

The eagle eyes among you will have counted 15 clubs in my bag. I choose either the 2-iron or 4-iron depending on the course and conditions on the day, as the 2-iron is great for windy days and links courses where low penetrating ball flights are required.
